From bespoke local designer shops and design studios to informal crafters on the streets of the CBD, the creative industry is an important, vibrant part of the Central City’s economy, and the Craft & Design Institute (CDI) is doing all it can to support creative entrepreneurs.

A non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting the needs of creative business in the Western Cape and beyond, the CDI’s mission is to develop capable people and build responsible enterprises that can trade successfully with both local and international markets. As part of this initiative, and along with product, market and design support, the CDI also runs courses on business support, which include business skills, creative development, personal development, coaching and mentoring,

Some of its upcoming courses include the following (with further information including costs for courses, venues and online registration on the CDI’s Community Calendar):

Business communication: 23 & 24 August; 09h00 till 15h30
This workshop will focus on personal communication, offering participants insight on and practical tools to use in improving the business owner’s ability to communicate effectively. The emphasis is placed on communication around selling and provides guidance on speaking and writing efficiently.

Product support introduction workshop: 24 August; 09h00 till 13h00
This introductory workshop is aimed at introducing new users to the CDI’s product support facility, and focuses on exposing participants to the range of tools and processes available within the space. Areas introduced include laser cutting and engraving, vinyl and sublimation transfers onto fabric, 3D milling as well as digital design and fabrication processes.

Product support workshop: one-day introduction to CNC milling: 29 August; 09h00 till 13h00
The workshop is an introduction to designing for CNC. Participants will be introduced to using 3D modelling software and CNC machinery.

Product support workshop: 3D printing: 5 to 7 September; 09h00 till 13h00
Participants explore how to use 3D modelling software, 3D printing, and 3D scanning, mould making, laser cutting etc. Day one involves a discussion of and introduction to the 3D modelling software 123Design. Day two covers scanning and generating your own models using 3D scanners and vectors.

HR: getting the job done – employment contracts: 5 September; 13h00 till 15h30
It is essential to understand the basic labour laws governing employment and the role of an employer. This workshop assists creative entrepreneurs to navigate basic employment contracts and to ensure compliance with the labour laws of South Africa.

Business sales: 6 & 7 September; 09h00 till 15h30
This workshop is aimed at entrepreneurs that want to grow their businesses by improving their sales. The programme includes the principles of selling as well as practical application skills. There is a strategic element to the workshop and it is best suited for entrepreneurs who have a reasonable measure of business experience and the desire to develop their business.
