Run along with the Cape Town Marathon

The 2017 event passes through the Central City, providing plenty of opportunity to spectate.

The first IAAF Gold label city marathon in Africa takes place on Sunday 17 September. Organisers have modified this year’s route to make it even faster for runners, but it maintains excellent vantage points for those of us who want to join in the vibe but can’t run the distance.

The marathon starts in Green Point and passes through the CBD via Long, Orange, Plein and Darling streets before moving to the southern suburbs. It returns via the Foreshore area. 10 000 runners are set to take part, passing sites including the Castle of Good Hope, St George’s Cathedral, Parliament and The Company’s Garden.

Last year’s winners, Britain’s Tish Jones and Ethiopia’s Asefa Mengstu Negewo, have confirmed they will be back to defend their crowns. This year’s elite field also includes top South African athletes Lungile Gonqa (Olympian and Two Oceans champion), Agnes Kiprop (Kenya), who has the fastest Gold label time in the women’s field, and Abrha Milaw Asefa (Ethopia), currently the fastest in the men’s field, with a time of 2:07:46.

Other well-known sports stars will take part in the “captains” challenge. They are former Springbok rugby captains Francois Pienaar and John Smit, previous Proteas netball captain Zanele Mdodana, and ex Bafana Bafana captain Lucas Radebe.

The best place to cheer these athletes on will be at the dedicated spectator zones at the Grand Parade, Sun 1 Foreshore (Jan Smuts Street), along FW de Klerk Boulevard, and on Lower Loop Street.
