Support The Big Issue and get our guide to the Cape Town Central City

Each December, the year-end bumper edition of The Big Issue also carries a copy of the CCID’s latest Best of Cape Town Central City guide. Another good reason to buy this great read and support the vendors on the streets.

The Big Issue is a socially responsible non-profit organisation, started in 1997 to enable- willing unemployed and marginalised adults to take responsibility for their own lives through a developmental employment programme.

The magazine produced by the non-profit monthly is a great general lifestyle read that’s sold on the streets across the city, including the CBD, by vendors involved in the programme. The official vendors of The Big Issue are easily recognised through their blue and white Big Issue bibs they wear. This way, you can rest assured you’re supporting the right individuals.

These vendors come from all walks of life, and the opportunity to sell the magazine has been life-changing for many. Buying a copy of the magazine (and a few more for friends) supports around 80 vendors while keeping you, as the reader, updated and entertained. But even better news is that the December bumper edition always carries a copy of the latest edition (2018) of the Cape Town CCID’s own Best of Cape Town Central City guide.

The guide has over 300 places to enjoy in the CBD, and is just a hint of the many venues and experiences on offer in the Cape Town Central City. There are around 900 more to be discovered on the CCID’s own website.

According to the CCID’s project coordinator, Aziza Patandin, the year-end bumper edition is a result of a long-standing relationship between the two organisations. “We’ve had this relationship with The Big Issue for a number of years, whereby we supply the publishers with 15 000 copies, to be bagged together with the magazine’s end-of-year ‘Bumper Edition’. We see it as a way in which to assist vendors to sell this particular issue over the festive season and add value to The Big Issue offering,”

With a total of 60 000 copies of the Best of Cape Town Central City guide produced annually, the remainder are distributed free of charge via a variety of outlets, with many being distributed by retailers, restaurants, hotels and visitor information centres, who fall within the CCID footprint.

However, what’s in the guide is just a taste of what’s on offer. According to the CCID’s Communications’ online coordinator, Scott Arendse, the guide complements the CCID’s ‘Explore’ section on the website which features all destinations in the CBD in terms of places to Stay, Eat, Play, Visit, Shop. In addition, the website also has a directory for service industries (Services) and educational institutes (Learn).

Hardcopies of the Best of Cape Town Central City 2018 guide can be obtained by emailing Aziza Patandin aziza@capetownccid.org. The guide is also available online.
