Campaign hits the R25k mark

By SIMANGELE MZIZI

The Cape Town Central City Improvement District’s 2019 “Show you care” campaign, aimed at raising R100K for the CBD’s homeless community, has reached the quarter-way mark.

The focus of the campaign is to raise R100 000 for the homeless via SnapScan, which makes it easy to support. And so far, R29 011.00 has been raised for the CCID’s partner NGOs that make a real difference to the lives of this vulnerable community.

While there’s still a long way to reach the target, CCID’s Social Development manager Pat Eddy is grateful for the support from all the contributors.

Says Pat: “We are excited and pleased to reach the quarter-way mark in our bid to raise R100 000. We are very grateful for the support from the hundreds of Central City businesses, including retailers, restaurants and hotels, who are promoting the campaign by displaying our ‘table talkers’ in their establishments.

“We are also indebted to members of the public for their generous donations. While we still have a long way to go, we are so heartened by the response to the ‘Show you care’ campaign thus far.”

The campaign, now in its second month, has also been endorsed by Dan Plato, Executive Mayor of Cape Town: “I want to applaud the CCID on this caring initiative, as it is only by working together that we can tackle the challenges facing our society. The City has a number of programmes in place to assist the homeless, and campaigns such as the CCID’s 'Show you care' go a long way towards further supporting the many NGOs who play an important role in assisting the most vulnerable in our community.”

The funds raised by the campaign will be distributed to the CCID’s NGO partners, Khulisa Social Solutions, Straatwerk, The Hope Exchange, Youth Solutions Africa, Ons Plek and The Homestead. The money will go towards providing shelter space, food, clothing, work-based rehabilitation programmes and social services to those who find themselves destitute or down on their luck.

BRINGING THE PLIGHT OF THE HOMELESS TO THE PUBLIC

Besides supporting the CCID Social Development department’s efforts to make winter more bearable for people living on the street in the CBD, the “Show you care” campaign aims to bring into the public eye the plight of the homeless. The campaign also aims to highlight the work done by the department’s field workers who engage daily with this community.

The services that this team delivers are vital components of any downtown that strives to be vibrant, resilient, tolerant and inclusive. The engagements that the CCID’s Social team undertakes aid in assisting street people towards a path of reunification with their families, channelling them towards appropriate rehabilitation or medical care, referring them for a job opportunity or a skills development programme, or even securing them a safe place for the night.
