Four things to do in the CBD to avoid afternoon traffic

by CCID

Instead of joining the afternoon rush-hour traffic, why not stick around in the Central City after work?

Did you know the average car commute from the CBD is 16.9km and the average time spent in traffic is 61.8 minutes? That’s an hour of your life wasted – on a good day. You could rather use the time to:

Get a haircut

Go for a sundowner or have an early dinner

Swim some laps

If you fancy some R and R, there’s nothing better than a swim after a busy day at work – especially in the sweltering summer months. Long Street swimming pool has recently reopened after extensive renovations.

Cost: R22 for adults, R11 for children under 16 and R254 for a monthly membership

Long Street Baths: 313 Long St, 021 400 3302

Visit a gallery

Other options

Flexitime: Have you ever considered approaching your boss about the possibility of working flexitime? Doing so permanently could help alleviate traffic congestion in general as commutes are scattered over a longer period of time.

Public transport: Leave the driving to someone else while you read a book on the train or bus. For information on all public transport options in the CBD (and throughout the city), from schedules to what’s available, call the City of Cape Town’s Transport 24/7 Information Centre on 0800 65 64 63.
