The Iziko Planetarium (and Digital Dome) reopens after a full 3D makeover.
Remember the star machine, the device that emerged from the depths of the Planetarium and projected the solar system on its domed ceiling? If you went to school in Cape Town in the ‘90s or since the turn of this century, you will no doubt have taken part in this armchair space travel during an “outing”.
In 2017, a R28-million upgrade to the Planetarium has rendered the star machine old school. Now, students can see the Milky Way – and even beyond – on a full-dome theatre.
The new technology will also assist in e-research, allowing scientists to visualise data from the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) and MeerKAT radio telescope.
Furthermore, Iziko Museums envisions the digital dome to play a role in the arts. From 3D edutainment films to 360-degree digital installations, the possibilities are literally infinite.
The Iziko Planetarium and Digital Dome opened on 27 May. There are currently three shows on.
