At the end of June, the Cape Town Central City Improvement District (CCID) says goodbye to social worker Joseph “Joe” Maganga.
Joe, as he’s affectionately been known by the CCID family, has been an integral member of the CCID Social Development team since he joined the organisation in September 2016. The CCID’s Social Development team engages with the Central City’s most vulnerable individuals and forms partnerships to alleviate the CBD’s own challenges.
Says Pat Eddy, manager of CCID Social Development: “Joe has always been passionate about his work which he has consistently performed in a highly professional manner. Under extremely difficult circumstances, he has also maintained a sense of humour and displayed a positive attitude.
“While I am extremely sad that we will be losing our colleague, I am also very excited for him as he’ll be moving to Australia to pursue further opportunities in social work, and I have no doubt that he’ll excel and continue to make a meaningful difference.”
A social worker through and through, Joe has worked in almost all the vulnerable communities in Cape Town, including Manenberg, Gugulethu, Nyanga, Philippi, Crossroads, Hanover Park and Heideveld. He started his career in Johannesburg as a resident social worker at the Carl Sithole Social Centre in Soweto, a home caring for children in need of care and protection. He relocated to Cape Town in 2012 to join the child protection field, working for two years at the Cape Town Child Welfare Society. Thereafter, he worked as a developmental social worker for the Cape Town Association for the Physically Disabled before joining the CCID, where all his colleagues concur that they’ll miss Joe’s empathy and genuine smile along with his professional work ethic.
