The CCID’s annual Show You Care campaign concluded at the end of August. Here are some highlights.
In June, the CCID put out a special Show You Care edition of its quarterly newspaper, City Views, to kick off its Social Development winter campaign. The issue showcased several ways the public could help ease the plight of people living on the street.
The most accessible of these was the ability to donate money to one of the CCID’s six primary NGO partners via SnapScan, SMS or EFT. We are happy to announce that during the three-month campaign period we raised just over R15 000.
The CCID will split this amount evenly between The Carpenter’s Shop, Khulisa Social Solutions, Straatwerk, Youth Solutions Africa, Ons Plek and The Homestead.

Another facet of the Show You Care campaign was the donation bin project. We rolled these out to Central City businesses every winter for several years to encourage their staff to donate items for street people. This year, many of the original stakeholders ran with it themselves. Our fieldworkers received the following items from them, which they distributed to various NGOs.
- Men’s, women’s and children’s clothes, bed slippers, toilet paper and canned food from the Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel. Distributed to St Anne’s Homes and Youth Solutions Africa.
- Men’s, women’s and children’s’ clothing from Protea Hotel North Wharf. Distributed to The Carpenter’s Shop, St Anne’s Homes and Youth Solutions Africa.
- Five beds and two bags of pillows from The New Tulbagh Hotel. Distributed to Youth Solutions Africa, as well as directly to two clients, one of whom was shortly to move off the streets and one of whom had recently lost his possessions in a fire.
- Clothing and food from Machete Creative! Distributed to St Anne’s Homes and Youth Solutions Africa.
- Clothing from Boston City Campus & Business College. Distributed to The Carpenter’s Shop.
Partnership with YSA
Over the past year, the CCID has worked closely with one of its Central City NGO partners, Youth Solutions Africa, to sponsor the upgrade of the NGO’s Woodstock facility. Year round, it is now able to provide temporary shelter to 60 people in the form of beds, access to ablution facilities and two meals a day as well as social work counselling and group activities. The sponsorship, at over R250 000 also enabled the CCID fieldworkers to ensure that at least 18 beds per night could be set aside for the CCID’s own clients throughout the year The CCID also provided funding for an additional 30 clients to receive temporary shelter at the facility during the CCID’s Winter Drive campaign.
